The Route

The Most Scenic Way from Oslo to Bergen

Oslo and Bergen are Norway's two biggest destinations, and the land between them is what most visitors come for. The direct trains and flights skip it. Driving privately lets you cross the mountains, stop at Flåm on the Aurlandsfjord and come down to Bergen through the waterfall valleys near Stalheim and Voss.

You don't need to rent a car, handle mountain roads, tolls and ferries, or drop the car off. Your local driver does it all, and you spend the day looking out the window or sleeping if you prefer.

Good to know: this is a full day by design: about 7 hours of driving plus your stops. It works best for travellers who already plan to continue to Bergen, such as a city break, a fjord holiday or a Hurtigruten or cruise departure from Bergen.

The Day

Oslo to Bergen Itinerary

The route is flexible. Your driver adapts to the weather, road conditions and how much time you want at each stop.

1

Hotel Pickup in Oslo

Your driver collects you from your hotel in Oslo city centre. Luggage goes in the car, so you travel straight to your Bergen hotel at the end of the day.

2

Hardangervidda & the Mountain Plateau

The road climbs from the forests of Hallingdal onto open mountain country at the edge of Hardangervidda, Europe's largest high mountain plateau. Expect wide empty landscapes, snow patches into early summer and plenty of photo stops.

3

Flåm & the Aurlandsfjord

Descend towards Flåm, a small village at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, one of the arms of the Sognefjord. Time for lunch, a walk along the harbour and the view down the fjord. This is also where you can add the optional Flåm Railway.

4

Borgund Stave Church (Optional)

One of Norway's best preserved medieval stave churches, built around 1200. A short detour from the route, added when time and daylight allow.

5

Stalheim, Vossevangen & Waterfalls

The valley road to Stalheim passes steep cliffs and several waterfalls, and the Stalheim viewpoint looks down one of Norway's steepest valleys. From there, the lakeside town of Vossevangen is a good coffee stop before the last stretch.

6

Drop-off in Bergen

Your driver takes you to your hotel or address in Bergen. Your trip ends there, and we handle the return drive.
